Part 3 - Line 4a
EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS IN 2021 WE CENTERED OUR OFFERINGS ON THE UNIFYING IDEA OF AWAKENING, EXPLORING HOW TO BROADEN OUR PERSPECTIVE, UNDERSTAND OUR EMOTIONS, AND CULTIVATE EMPATHY. IN MARCH VISITORS ENCOUNTERED AWAKEN: A TIBETAN BUDDHIST JOURNEY TOWARD ENLIGHTENMENT, THE MUSEUM'S FIRST NEW EXHIBITION IN THE GALLERIES SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC. THE EXHIBITION FEATURED THIRTY-FIVE TRADITIONAL OBJECTS FROM THE SEVENTH TO TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY THAT SHOWCASED THE POWER OF TIBETAN BUDDHIST ART TO HELP PRACTITIONERS FOCUS AND REFINE AWARENESS. LATER WE OPENED TWO NEW CONTEMPORARY INSTALLATIONS BY ARTISTS ROHINI DEVASHER AND PALDEN WEINREB IN DIALOGUE WITH THE TIBETAN BUDDHIST SHRINE ROOM. BOTH ARTISTS INVITE CONTEMPLATION ON THE BOUNDARIES OF HUMAN PERCEPTION AND OUR PLACE IN THIS EARTHLY REALM.
PUBLIC PROGRAMS, EDUCATION AND VISITOR ENGAGEMENT:THE RUBIN'S PUBLIC PROGRAMS OFFER OUR DIVERSE AUDIENCES MEANINGFUL WAYS TO ENGAGE WITH THE ART AND CULTURES OF THE HIMALAYAS. IN 2021 WE CONTINUED TO OFFER INNOVATIVE ONLINE PROGRAMMING WITH OUR ANNUAL BRAINWAVE TALK SERIES, WEEKLY MINDFULNESS MEDITATION, AND THE LAUNCH OF A NEW PODCAST, AWAKEN, HOSTED BY LAURIE ANDERSON, WHICH RECEIVED OVER 70,000 LISTENS AND A WEBBY HONOR. WE SERVED VISITORS WITH ALZHEIMER'S AND DEMENTIA AND THEIR CARE PARTNERS, AS WELL AS FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, OFFERING THEM CUSTOM ONLINE OFFERINGS INFORMED BY MINDFULNESS AND HIMALAYAN ART AND CULTURES. WE WORKED WITH 392 LOW-INCOME STUDENTS IN SCHOOLS AS PART OF OUR VIRTUAL MATH AND MANDALAS RESIDENCY PROGRAM, AND MORE THAN 300 SENIORS ENJOYED FREE ADMISSION. OUR BIGGEST PROGRAMMATIC SHIFT CAME IN OCTOBER WHEN WE TRANSFORMED OUR THIRD FLOOR INTO THE MANDALA LAB, AN INTERACTIVE SPACE TO ENGAGE WITH EMOTIONS AND THE NEW HOME FOR SCHOOL AND FAMILY PROGRAMS. DRAWING ON THE TOOLS OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND FEATURING CONTRIBUTIONS FROM SIXTEEN ARTISTS, THE MANDALA LAB BRINGS PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION AND CURIOSITY ABOUT EMOTIONS TO THE HEART OF THE RUBIN, EMPOWERING AND GUIDING VISITORS TOWARD POSITIVE ACTION AND A BALANCED, COMPASSIONATE WORLD.
