ACCOUNTABLE GOVERNANCE: THE OAAF COMBATS INEQUALITY, THE ROOT CAUSE OF POVERTY AND INJUSTICE, THROUGH LEGISLATIVE LOBBYING AND POLITICAL ADVOCACY. EXAMPLES: OXFAM OBTAINED SIGNATURES FROM 11 GLOBAL ECONOMISTS ON A LETTER TO NEW YORK STATE REPRESENTATIVES REGARDING A BILL COMPELLING PRIVATE LENDERS TO ABIDE BY US GOVERNMENT DEBT RESTRUCTURING PLANS. OXFAM ALSO MONITORED SUPREME COURT CASES RELATED TO VOTING RIGHTS, LGBTQ+ RIGHTS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION. OXFAM ALSO LAUNCHED ITS FIFTH ANNUAL BEST STATES TO WORK INDEX AND BEST STATES FOR WORKING WOMEN INDEX. OXFAM IS PUSHING THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO STOP DEVELOPMENT OF NEW LIQUIFIED METHANE GAS FACILITIES, AND TO ENSURE CONGRESS DOESN'T RESTRICT ACTIONS RELATED TO INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE FINANCE, ENSURING THERE ARE FUNDS FOR CLEAN ENERGY DEVELOPMENT.
OTHER CAMPAIGN ACTIVITY
CAMPAIGNING: THE OAAF CAMPAIGNS FOR FAIR AND JUST POLICIES. OXFAM LAUNCHED A THREE-YEAR INITIATIVE CALLED THE NEW ERA FOR BLACK WOMEN AT ESSENCE FESTIVAL 2024. IT FOCUSES ON BLACK WOMEN, WHO COMPRISE THE MAJORITY OF LOW-WAGE WORKERS IN THE U.S. A 12-MEMBER COUNCIL OF DIVERSE BLACK WOMEN LEADERS SHAPE THE DIRECTION AND GOALS, WHICH ARE TO FOCUS ON THE EXPERIENCES OF BLACK LOW-WAGE WOMEN WORKERS, PUBLICIZE THEIR STORIES, AND PROMOTE POLICIES THAT ENHANCE THEIR CHANCES FOR UPWARD MOBILITY. OXFAM ALSO JOINED THE CARE CAN'T WAIT COALITION TO ADVOCATE FOR IMPROVED U.S. CARE POLICIES, FOCUSING ON CHILD CARE, PAID FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE, AND HOME AND COMMUNITY-BASED CARE SERVICES. WE AIM TO ENSURE THESE POLICIES ARE CENTRAL IN THE 2024 ELECTIONS AND DEBATED AND PASSED IN 2025.
EDUCATING THE PUBLIC: OXFAM CONDUCTED A PILOT PROGRAM WITH PREVIOUS OXFAM CHANGE LEADERS THROUGHOUT THE U.S., IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHER ENGAGEMENT BASED ON THEIR CAREER PATHS AND INFLUENCE. THIRTEEN ALUMNI WERE IDENTIFIED FOR POTENTIAL ROLES AS OA SISTERS ON THE PLANET AMBASSADORS. REGARDING CLIMATE CHANGE, OXFAM RELEASED "CLIMATE EQUALITY: A PLANET FOR THE 99%," A REPORT THAT RECEIVED 48 MEDIA HITS IN THE US, INCLUDING THE WASHINGTON POST. NEARLY 11,460 PEOPLE SIGNED OUR MAKE RICH POLLUTERS PAY PETITION. WE ISSUED REACTIONS REGARDING THE OVERALL OUTCOMES OF COP28 AND THE U.S. CLIMATE FINANCE PLEDGE. OXFAM ALSO CHALLENGED THE U.S. TO CREATE A NEW MARKET FOR CARBON OFFSETS AS A WAY TO GENERATE FUNDS FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH.
