Part 3 - Line 4a
PROPUBLICA'S 2023 REPORTING SHONE AN UNPRECEDENTED SPOTLIGHT ON INFLUENCE AND ETHICS AT THE SUPREME COURT. A SERIES OF INVESTIGATIVE STORIES REVEALED THE FINANCIAL TIES BETWEEN JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS AND BILLIONAIRE REPUBLICAN MEGA-DONOR HARLAN CROW; DOCUMENTED JUSTICE SAMUEL ALITO'S LUXURY TRAVEL WITH BILLIONAIRE AND REPUBLICAN DONOR PAUL SINGER; AND CHRONICLED CONSERVATIVE KINGMAKER LEONARD LEO'S WEB OF MONEY, INFLUENCE AND POWER. WE ALSO PUBLISHED A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND DATABASE THAT MADE IT EASY FOR THE PUBLIC TO SEARCH AND READ FOR THEMSELVES THE JUSTICES' ANNUAL FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES.[SEE CONTINUATION ON SCHEDULE O]OUR JOURNALISM PROMPTED HISTORIC REFORMS. THE COURT ADOPTED A CODE OF CONDUCT, A FIRST IN ITS 235-YEAR HISTORY. DOZENS OF MEMBERS OF CONGRESS HAVE PRESSED FOR ETHICS REFORM, INTRODUCING MULTIPLE BILLS. THE SENATE HELD HEARINGS ON THE SUBJECT, OPENED AN INVESTIGATION AND AUTHORIZED SUBPOENAS. JUSTICE THOMAS AMENDED HIS PAST FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES TO REPORT SOME - BUT NOT ALL - OF WHAT THE REPORTERS UNCOVERED.OUR INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM CONTINUES TO PRODUCE OTHER SIGNIFICANT REAL-WORLD CHANGE. FOLLOWING OUR 2023 REPORTING WITH LOCAL REPORTING NETWORK PARTNER IDAHO STATESMAN, IDAHO GOV. BRAD LITTLE PROPOSED A $2 BILLION INVESTMENT IN THE STATE'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS INFRASTRUCTURE - THE LARGEST INVESTMENT IN SCHOOL FACILITIES IN STATE HISTORY. IN HIS ANNOUNCEMENT, LITTLE SHOWED THE PHOTOS OF FALLEN CEILING TILES, CRACKED PAINT AND DAMAGED DRAINS WE PUBLISHED AS A PART OF THE INVESTIGATION. PHILIPS RESPIRONICS ANNOUNCED THAT IT WOULD STOP MANUFACTURING AND SELLING ALL SLEEP APNEA MACHINES AND VENTILATORS IN THE UNITED STATES, FOLLOWING OUR INVESTIGATION WITH PARTNER PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE THAT EXPOSED HOW THE COMPANY HELD BACK THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT ITS POPULAR BREATHING MACHINES FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, DESPITE EVIDENCE THAT THE DEVICES COULD RELEASE POTENTIALLY TOXIC PARTICLES AND FUMES INTO THE MASKS WORN BY PATIENTS.THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER MILESTONES FROM OUR 15TH YEAR OF REPORTING: WE OPENED A NEW REPORTING HUB IN THE NORTHWEST; WE LAUNCHED AN EDITOR TRAINING PROGRAM TO INCREASE THE RANKS OF INVESTIGATIVE EDITORS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS; AND WE PUBLISHED OUR FIRST INTERVIEW WITH A SITTING PRESIDENT.
