JUNIOR PROGRAM - PROVIDED 625 PARTICIPANT DAYS OF HIKING, CANOEING, CAMPING AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR YOUTH FROM 4 TO 18 YEARS OLD IN THE ADIRONDACK PARK HIGH PEAKS REGION. THE PROGRAM ALSO SUPPORTED TRAINING FOR COUNSELORS IN BASIC FIRST AID, WILDERNESS FIRST AID AND LIFEGUARDING FOR THE BENEFIT OF BOTH THE YOUTH AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
TRAIL MAINTENANCE - CONSTRUCT, MAINTAIN, AND IMPROVE 105 MILES OF PUBLIC HIKING TRAILS IN THE ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS IN THE VICINITY OF KEENE VALLEY, NEW YORK. WORK IS ACCOMPLISHED BY A SIX-MEMBER PROFESSIONAL CREW AND INCLUDES CLEARING DOWNED TREES, PRUNING BACK BRUSH, MOWING WEEDS AND GRASSES, ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING DRAINAGE STRUCTURES, BUILDING BRIDGES, AND INSTALLING HARD TREAD WHERE NEEDED. THE STATE OF NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION MAINTAINS TRAIL SIGN-IN REGISTERS AT EIGHT OF THE ELEVEN TRAILHEADS WHERE HIKERS ACCESS THE TRAILS MAINTAINED BY THE SOCIETY. REGISTER STATISTICS SHOWED USE BY 79,110 HIKERS IN 2021.
