SAMARITANS' 24-HOUR CONFIDENTIAL 24-HOUR SUICIDE HOTLINE PROVIDES A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO GOVERNMENT-RUN SERVICES FOR THOSE RESISTANT TO SEEKING HELP. ADAPTING TO THE RESTRICTIONS OF THE PANDEMIC, IN FY 2020, THE HOTLINE RESPONDED TO OVER 64,000 CONTACTS, 46,744 OF THEM CALLS FROM PEOPLE IN DISTRESS, THOSE CONCERNED WITH SOMEONE IN CRISIS OR SEEKING INFORMATION AND RESOURCES. THIS FREE SERVICE WAS STAFFED BY 70 VOLUNTEERS FROM NYC'S CULTUTALLY DIVERSE COMMUNITIES WHWO DONATED OVER 25,000 HOURS OF THEIR TIME (OVER 1.5 MONTHS OF FULL-TIME WORK EACH, VALUED AT 800,000 IN FREE LABOR). IN CONTRACT WITH THE NYC DEPT. OF HEALTH FOR 30 YEARS, SAMARITANS CONTINUES TO MEET ALL CONTRACT COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS.
FOR OVER 35 YEARS, NYC'S OLDEST SUICIDE PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAM HAS BEEN ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES PROVIDERS FACE WORKING WITH AT-RISK POPULATIONS. ADAPTING OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM TO ADDRESS THE CHANGING NEEDS OF PROVIDING SUPPORT DURING A PANDEMIC, IN FY 2020, WITH FUNDING FROM THE NYC COUNCIL, SAMARITANS TRAINED 868 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, ETC. WORKING IN 391 NYC SCHOOLS, 237 MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY, AND 387 COMMUNITY/GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, INCLUDING: NYC DOE (1.2 MILLION STUDENTS IN 1,600 SCHOOLS), NYPD, NYC DOHMH, MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL, VA MEDICAL CENTER, NYCHA, VIBRANT EMOTIONAL HEALTH, CUNY, SALVATION ARMY, CATHOLIC CHARITIES, NEW YORK FOUNDLING HOSPITAL, NYU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, HAMILTON MADISON HOUSE, JEWISH BOARD ETC.
