TO FULFILL THE CENTER'S MISSION OF "PROVIDING THE RESIDENTS OF THE BRONX AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES WITH ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, CULTURALLY DIVERSE MUSIC, DANCE AND THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES THAT ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE, AND INSPIRE" THE LINEUP OF EVENTS IS REFLECTIVE OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD'S NEEDS. OF THE TOTAL POPULATION IN THE BRONX, 56% OF PEOPLE IDENTIFY AS HISPANIC SO HAVING A ROBUST LATIN MUSIC SERIES HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PRIORITY FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. IN ITS TENURE LEHMAN CENTER HAS PRESENTED SOME OF THE GREATEST NAMES IN LATIN MUSIC, INCLUDING CELIA CRUZ, EL GRAN COMBO, RUBEN BLADES, VICTOR MANUEL, EDDIE PALMIERI, WILLIE COLON AND VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE "HOME GROWN" FAMILY OF FANIA RECORDS, CELEBRATING ONE OF NEW YORK'S MOST BELOVED CONTRIBUTIONS TO WORLD MUSIC - SALSA! IN ADDITION TO THESE WELL-LOVED LATIN MUSIC EVENTS, LEHMAN CENTER IS DEDICATED TO BRINGING IN ARTISTS WHO MIGHT NOT NORMALLY PERFORM ON A STAGE IN THE HEART OF THE BRONX. THIS BALANCE OF POPULAR FARE ALONGSIDE GREAT CLASSICS IS WHAT MAKES THE CULTURAL VISION OF THE CENTER SO SPECIAL. KING, CHUCK BERRY, MUMMENSCHANZ, AND THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET.WHEN REOPENING THE CENTER IN 2021, AFTER THE 15-MONTH SHUTDOWN IN 2020, IT BECAME A PRIORITY TO BRANCH OUT AND CREATE A SEASON THAT WAS RICH WITH CULTURE WHILE DELIVERING SOMETHING THAT COULD GET PEOPLE EXCITED AGAIN! THIS DEVELOPED INTO UNIQUE COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS IN THE AREA. THE FIRST COLLABORATION WAS AN EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL RESIDENCY WITH THE WESTCHESTER BALLET COMPANY IN THEIR RENDITION OF THE NUTCRACKER. THIS BALLET WAS PART OF A LONGSTANDING TRADITION TO OFFER STIMULATING, FAMILY FRIENDLY, CLASSICAL BALLET CONCERTS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. THIS PARTNERSHIP WAS A PROUD MOMENT FOR LEHMAN CENTER TO EXPAND THEIR TYPICAL AUDIENCE BASE IN THE BRONX UPWARDS INTO WESTCHESTER COUNTY.THE SPRING OF 2022 WAS THE SEASON FOR ANNIVERSARIES AT LEHMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS SINCE THEIR INCEPTION, THE INNOVATIVE CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY, PILOBOLUS PRESENTED A SPECIAL SEMICENTENNIAL PERFORMANCE AT THE CONCERT HALL. THIS SHOWCASE, BEGINNING WITH A SPECIAL RECEPTION, TOOK AUDIENCES ON A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WORLD-RENOWNED WORKS OF THIS IMMACULATE DANCE COMPANY. IN A SPECIAL FIRST-TIME COLLABORATION, LEHMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS WORKED WITH THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK (CUNY) MEXICAN STUDIES INSTITUTE TO PRESENT THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BALLET FOLKLORICO DE MEXICO DE AMALIA HERNANDEZ. THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN ICONIC TO THE CULTURAL REPRESENTATION OF MEXICO FOR DECADES, SO HAVING THEM PERFORM LIVE FOR OUR MEXICAN COMMUNITY AT LEHMAN CENTER WAS A CHERISHED EXPERIENCE FOR AUDIENCES AND STAFF ALIKE. WE ALSO DID WORK WITH COMMUNITY AT LARGE TO PRODUCE TWO SPECIAL TRIBUTE CONCERTS. ON MARCH 5, 2022, WE DID A TRIBUTE TO ROBERT SANCHO WHO OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS PRODUCED OPENING GALA CONCERTS FOR LEHMAN CENTER RAISING ON AVERAGE $50,000 PER CONCERT. OUR SECOND TRIBUTE WAS TO THE FORMER BOROUGH PRESIDENT, RUBIN DIAZ, JR. WITH A SPECIAL ALL-STAR HIP HOP CONCERT WHICH DREW MANY OF HIS SUPPORTERS AND RECEIVED GREAT MEDIA ATTENTION. OUR NEW BOROUGH PRESIDENT, VANESSA L. GIBSON HOSTED HER INAUGURAL EVENT ON MARCH 27, 2022 AT LEHMAN CENTER WITH NUMEROUS PROMINENT POLITICIANS IN THE AUDIENCE.LEHMAN CENTER ALSO RECEIVED INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION WHEN IT WAS FEATURED BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.
