Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
LITERATUREON OUR PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL STAGES, SYMPHONY SPACE PRESENTS A FULL SLATE OF ARTISTICALLY AND CULTURALLY DIVERSE LITERARY PROGRAMS THAT FEATURE CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY WORKS BY ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING AUTHORS. OUR SELECTED SHORTS LITERARY SERIES WAS CONCEIVED WITH A SIMPLE PREMISE-GREAT STORIES PERFORMED BY GREAT ACTORS-AND IT HAS INFLUENCED GENERATIONS OF READERS THROUGH LIVE PERFORMANCES ON STAGES IN NEW YORK CITY AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE SELECTED SHORTS RADIO HOUR AIRS ON 125 PUBLIC RADIO STATIONS, ATTRACTING 220,000 LISTENERS EACH WEEK; MORE THAN 66,000 PEOPLE DOWNLOAD THE PODCAST EVERY WEEK. AT THE THALIA BOOK CLUB AND THALIA KIDS BOOK CLUB, READERS AND WRITERS REVISIT CHERISHED CLASSICS AND EXPLORE NEW AND NOTEWORTHY WORKS THROUGHOUT EVENTS THAT FEATURE WIDE-RANGING AUTHOR INTERVIEWS, A VIVID PERFORMANCE OF AN EXCERPT BY AN ACTOR, AND A LIVELY Q & A WITH THE AUDIENCE. IN FY 21, OUR PROGRAMS WERE VIRTUAL AND WE PRESENTED A REDUCED SEASON, CONSISTING OF 29 LITERARY EVENTS, INCLUDING OUR 40TH BLOOMSDAY ON BROADWAY WITH A VIRTUAL PANEL OF AUTHORS DISCUSSING JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES, AND A NEW INNOVATIVE PERFORMANCE BY ELEVATOR REPAIR SERVICE.
ARTS EDUCATIONHARNESSING THE POWER OF THE ARTS TO TRANSFORM LIVES, SYMPHONY SPACE'S GLOBAL ARTS PROGRAM HELPS STUDENTS DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFERENT CULTURES AND THE COMMON TRADITIONS THAT BRING US TOGETHER AS A GLOBAL COMMUNITY. THE PROGRAM CELEBRATES THE BEAUTY INHERENT IN THE ART AND HISTORY OF DIVERSE CULTURES-ASIA, AFRICA, LATIN AMERICA, NATIVE AMERICA, AND EARLY AMERICA. DURING IN-SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES AND WORKSHOPS, AND INTERACTIVE CULTURAL FIELD TRIPS TO SYMPHONY SPACE, TEACHING ARTISTS HELP STUDENTS EXPLORE A CULTURE BY PLAYING INSTRUMENTS, PARTICIPATING IN DANCES, AND LEARNING ABOUT THE LANGUAGES AND VALUES OF EACH CULTURE THROUGH TRADITIONAL FOLK TALES. IN RESPONSE TO THE SYSTEM-WIDE SCHOOL CLOSURES AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMIC, WE IMMEDIATELY PIVOTED TO DELIVER GLOBAL ARTS REMOTELY. OUR EDUCATION TEAM AND TEACHING ARTISTS RESHAPED THE EXISTING, IN-PERSON PROGRAM TO DELIVER MEANINGFUL, INTERACTIVE, AND AUTHENTIC REMOTE EXPERIENCES FOR MORE THAN 15,000 STUDENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS IN MORE THAN 50 SCHOOLS. WE PRODUCED LEARNING CURRICULUM RESOURCE GUIDES, CREATED NEW DIGITAL VIDEO PROGRAMS, CURATED ARCHIVAL PERFORMANCE CONTENT, TAUGHT SYNCHRONOUS INTERACTIVE CLASSES VIA ZOOM AND OTHER PLATFORMS, AND DEVELOPED STUDENT-DIRECTED ACTIVITIES FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO USE DURING THEIR VIRTUAL CLASSES. THROUGH THOUGHTFUL COMMUNICATION WITH OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS, WE USED THESE DIGITAL RESOURCES TO DELIVER ON THE ORIGINAL GOAL OF THIS INNOVATIVE ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM: TO ENHANCE AND ILLUMINATE SOCIAL STUDIES THROUGH THE ARTS.IN AN EFFORT TO REACH AS MANY STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE EVEN AMIDST THE PANDEMIC, WE OFFERED OUR ENTIRE CATALOG OF ASYNCHRONOUS CURRICULA TO TITLE I SCHOOLS FREE OF CHARGE. IN ADDITION, TWO NEW PROJECTS WERE OFFERED FREE TO ALL PARTNER NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS. THE FIRST, A TRIBUTE TO BLACK HISTORY AND CULTURE, FEATURED FILMED PERFORMANCES CELEBRATING AFRICAN MUSIC AND DANCE, AND INCLUDED A RESOURCE GUIDE WITH VOCABULARY, IMAGES, AND ACTIVITIES TO CONTEXTUALIZE AND ENGAGE WITH THE VIDEO. THE SECOND, CINCO DE MAYO, CELEBRATED MEXICAN CULTURE AND HERITAGE THROUGH THE BEAUTY, HISTORY, AND INFLUENCE OF MEXICAN ART. WE COLLABORATED WITH 19 TITLE 1 SCHOOLS THIS YEAR TO PROVIDE OVER 7,000 STUDENTS WITH THESE ENRICHING REMOTE LESSONS.SYMPHONY SPACE'S ALL WRITE! LITERACY PROGRAM HELPS ADULT LEARNERS DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE THEIR READING AND WRITING SKILLS-ALONG WITH THEIR PROSPECTS FOR A MORE SATISFYING LIFE. SYMPHONY SPACE PARTNERS WITH THE COLLEGES, LIBRARIES, AND COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO OPEN A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULT LEARNERS AND THEIR FAMILIES-COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE. DESPITE THE CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY CENTERS, ALL WRITE! CONTINUES TO SERVE STUDENTS VIRTUALLY. WE SHIFTED THE PERFORMANCES FROM THE SYMPHONY SPACE STAGE TO A DIGITAL PLATFORM, ENSURING THAT STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THEIR STORIES AND VOICES.
RENTALSSYMPHONY SPACE FOSTERS COMMUNITY AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSION BEYOND OUR OWN PROGRAMMING, FROM MAYORAL DEBATES TO MUSIC PERFORMANCES, FROM SCHOOL GRADUATIONS TO INTERNATIONAL DANCE COMPETITIONS. BY OFFERING FULLY-EQUIPPED THEATERS, AS WELL AS BOX OFFICE, MARKETING, AND HOUSE MANAGEMENT SERVICES AT RENTAL RATES LOWER THAN COMPARABLE VENUES, WE PROVIDE AN AFFORDABLE HOME TO MORE THAN 170 COMMUNITY AND PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS IN NEW YORK CITY, INCLUDING THE WORLD MUSIC INSTITUTE, THE VALENTINA KOZLOVA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION, THE NEW AMSTERDAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, THE AFRO-LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA, AND MANY, MANY MORE. DURING FY21, OUR RENTAL PROGRAM WAS DRAMATICALLY REDUCED. WE WERE ABLE TO SUPPORT THE ACTIVITIES OF THREE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS: PROSPECT THEATER COMPANY, AMERICAN YOUTH DANCE THEATER, AND THE JOFFREY BALLET SCHOOL, OFFERING OUR THEATERS AT A SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED RATE. A NECESSITY NOW MORE THAN EVER, SYMPHONY SPACE CONTINUES TO BE AN AFFORDABLE AND SAFE HOME FOR ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY.
MUSICSYMPHONY SPACE HAS A LONG AND ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY AS A PRESENTER OF DISTINCTIVE MUSIC EVENTS ACROSS GENRES-FROM CLASSICAL TO CONTEMPORARY, OPERA TO BROADWAY, AND BLUEGRASS TO WORLD MUSIC. WE CONTINUE TO BUILD UPON THIS LEGACY THROUGH ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES, WORLD AND NEW YORK PREMIERES, AND EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCES. WHILE THE AMOUNT OF MUSIC EVENTS WAS GREATLY DECREASED IN FY 21, WE PREMIERED A NEW SERIES, EXPLORING THE BLUES WITH COREY HARRIS, FEATURED A TRIO OF VIRTUAL CONCERTS AND CONVERSATIONS CENTERED AROUND THE BLUES, THE MUSICAL ART FORM AT THE BASE OF FOLK MUSIC. JUST KIDDING PRESENTED FIVE INTERACTIVE, KID-CENTERED LIVE PERFORMANCES BY AWARD-WINNING PUPPETEER BONNIE DUNCAN OF THE GOTTABEES.TOTAL EXPENSES AND REVENUES FOR BROADCASTING, FILM, MUSIC, FAMILY PROGRAMS, WALL TO WALL, AND OTHER PROGRAMS:
