MACDOWELL'S MISSION IS TO NURTURE THE ARTS BY OFFERING TALENTED INDIVIDUALS AN INSPIRING RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH TO PRODUCE ENDURING WORKS OF THE IMAGINATION. MACDOWELL WELCOMES ARTISTS ENGAGING IN THE BROADEST SPECTRUM OF ARTISTIC PRACTICE AND THOSE INVESTIGATING AN UNLIMITED ARRAY OF CREATIVE INQUIRIES AND CONCERNS. MACDOWELL APPLIES THE SAME EGALITARIAN STANDARDS FOR ALL THOSE WHO SERVE THE ORGANIZATION IN A STAFF, VOLUNTEER, OR REPRESENTATIVE CAPACITY. MACDOWELL GRANTS FELLOWSHIPS TO AS MANY AS 300 ARTISTS PER YEAR, OFFERING ROOM, BOARD, AND EXCLUSIVE USE OF A STUDIO FOR STAYS UP TO SIX WEEKS. APPLICATION IS OPEN TO ALL ARTISTS NOT CURRENTLY MATRICULATED AS STUDENTS. THE SOLE CRITERION FOR ACCEPTANCE IS THE ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE APPARENT IN A WORK SAMPLE SUBMITTED IN THE APPLICATION AND EVALUATED BY PEER PANEL REVIEW. MACDOWELL DEFINES ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE IN A PLURALISTIC AND INCLUSIVE WAY, ENCOURAGING APPLICATIONS FROM THE WIDEST POSSIBLE RANGE OF PERSPECTIVES, CAREER STAGES, AND DEMOGRAPHICS. WHILE IN RESIDENCE, ARTISTS RECEIVE ROOM, BOARD, AND EXCLUSIVE USE OF A STUDIO FOR UP TO SIX WEEKS. ALL ARTISTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF TRAVEL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH GETTING TO AND FROM MACDOWELL. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND STIPENDS OF UP TO $2,500 ARE AWARDED BASED ON FINANCIAL NEED. MACDOWELL REOPENED THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN OCTOBER, 2020, AFTER A SEVEN-MONTH CLOSURE REQUIRED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THE RESIDENT POPULATION WAS GRADUALLY INCREASED THROUGHOUT 2021, A YEAR IN WHICH MACDOWELL HOSTED 159 ARTISTS FOR A TOTAL OF 3,732 "ARTIST-DAYS" (THE AVERAGE RESIDENCY BEING 20 DAYS). A TOTAL OF 51 ARTISTS RECEIVED FINANCIAL AID STIPENDS TOTALING $78,750. HISTORICALLY, EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROGRAMS, PUBLICATION, PRESENTATIONS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES HAVE ALLOWED MACDOWELL TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF THE ARTS FOR AN INCLUSIVE PUBLIC AUDIENCE. PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS AGAINST INDOOR GATHERINGS FORCED THE DEFERRAL OF TWO OUT OF THREE HISTORICAL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS, MACDOWELL IN THE SCHOOLS & MACDOWELL DOWNTOWN. THE THIRD, ROSEANNE CASH'S ACCEPTANCE OF THE 2020 EDWARD MACDOWELL MEDAL IN THE ARTS, WAS REALIZED IN JUNE 2021, WITH THE AWARD CEREMONY FILMED BY NEW HAMPSHIRE PUBLIC TELEVISION, WHICH WAS THEN INCLUDED IN A JOINT NH PBS-MACDOWELL PRODUCTION PROFILING BOTH MS. CASH AND MACDOWELL. MACDOWELL ALSO CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF ITS VIRTUAL PUBLIC PROGRAMS, SOME INAUGURATED IN 2020, INCLUDING: "CONVERSATION ABOUT SOCIAL JUSTICE", AN ONLINE COLLECTION OF FELLOWS WORK CURATED BY MACDOWELL CHAIRMAN, NELL PAINTER; A SERIES OF ESSAYS BY FELLOWS TITLED "WHY MACDOWELL NOW; EVENT COLLABORATIONS WITH PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS (URBAN WORD, 92ND STREET Y, RONA JAFFE FOUNDATION); FELLOWS WORKSHARES AND FURTHER DEVELOPING ITS WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTERS IN SUPPORT OF ARTISTS AND ACCESS. IN 2021, MACDOWELL ALSO CONTINUED ITS THREE-YEAR COLLABORATION (2020-2022) WITH YANCEY CONSULTING, FURTHER DEVELOPING ITS EXPLORATIONS OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND ACCESS THROUGHOUT THE ORGANIZATION BY ENGAGING A MIXTURE OF BOARD AND STAFF FOCUS GROUPS TARGETING PARTICULAR PROGRAM AND ADMINISTRATIVE AREAS, FELLOWS INTERVIEWS AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF VIRTUAL MACDOWELL, AN ARTIST SUPPORT, COMMUNITY AND OUTREACH TOOL PILOTED IN 2020.
