THE EDISON ELECTRIC INSTITUTE (EEI) IS THE ASSOCIATION THAT REPRESENTS ALL U.S. INVESTOR-OWNED ELECTRIC COMPANIES. OUR MEMBERS PROVIDE ELECTRICITY FOR MORE THAN 235 MILLION AMERICANS, AND OPERATE IN ALL 50 STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE ELECTRIC POWER INDUSTRY SUPPORTS MORE THAN 7 MILLION JOBS IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. IN ADDITION TO OUR U.S. MEMBERS, EEI HAS MORE THAN 65 INTERNATIONAL ELECTRIC COMPANIES AS INTERNATIONAL MEMBERS AND HUNDREDS OF INDUSTRY SUPPLIERS AND RELATED ORGANIZATION AS ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. CLEAN ENERGY ACTIVITIES: EEI AND OUR MEMBER COMPANIES ARE WORKING TO GET THE ENERGY WE PROVIDE AS CLEAN AS WE CAN AS FAST AS WE CAN, WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE RELIABILITY AND AFFORDABILITY THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE CUSTOMERS AND COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. EEI IS FOCUSED ON A NUMBER OF ISSUES AND ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE CLEAN ENERGY TRANSFORMATION, INCLUDING ONGOING CLEAN ENERGY DEPLOYMENT AND EMISSIONS REDUCTIONS; THE NEED FOR A DIVERSE MIX OF GENERATION SOURCES; ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS AND POLICIES; RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FUNDING FOR THE RANGE OF NEW, CARBON-FREE TECHNOLOGIES NEEDED TO ACHIEVE LONG TERM CLEAN ENERGY GOALS; AND INTERCONNECTION POLICIES. THESE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES RELATE TO EEI'S MISSION AS THE ASSOCIATION OF INVESTOR-OWNED ELECTRIC COMPANIES.
GRID MODERNIZATION ACTIVITIES: EEI'S MEMBER COMPANIES INVEST SIGNIFICANT CAPITAL TO MAKE THE ENERGY GRID STRONGER, SMARTER, CLEANER, MORE DYNAMIC, AND MORE SECURE. EEI IS FOCUSED ON GRID MODERNIZATION ACTIVITIES AND POLICIES TO ENHANCE THE VALUE, RELIABILITY, AND RESILIENCE OF THE GRID, INCLUDING THE NEED FOR INCREASED TRANSMISSION; ONGOING GRID TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENTS; THE CYBER AND PHYSICAL SECURITY OF THE GRID; AND THE PLANNING, BUILDING, AND OPERATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM. THESE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES RELATE TO EEI'S MISSION AS THE ASSOCIATION OF INVESTOR-OWNED ELECTRIC COMPANIES.
