THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO PROMOTE AND ADVANCE THE HUMANE TREATMENT OF ANIMALS, PRIMARILY CATS AND DOGS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITY THAT THE ORGANIZATION ADMINISTERED FOR THE YEAR WAS TO OVERSEE THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE MUTT-I-GREES CURRICULUM AND HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3
MUTT-I-GREES CURRICULUM - A NATIONAL PROGRAM THAT RAISES AWARENESS OF THE PLIGHT OF SHELTER ANIMALS, ELEVATES THE STATUS OF MIXED BREED DOGS AND INCREASES SHELTER ADOPTIONS TO REDUCE EUTHANASIA. THE CURRICULUM IS THE INTELLECTUAL PATH TO NO-KILL AND THE SCHOLARLY ROAD TO PET ADOPTION. THE PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED IN MULTIPLE PHASES IN COLLABORATION WITH THE YALE UNIVERSITY OF THE 21ST CENTURY. IT IS AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM THAT BUILDS ON CHILDREN'S AFFINITY FOR ANIMALS AND HIGHLIGHTS THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS AND DESIRABILITY OF MUTT-I-GREES, OR SHELTER PETS. THE GOAL OF THE MUTT-I-GREES CURRICULUM IS TO ENABLE CHILDREN TO GROW UP TO BE CALM, CONFIDENT AND CARING. THE CURRICULUM TEACHES SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS AND IS UNIQUE IN ITS BRIDGING OF HUMANE EDUCATION AND THE EMERGING FIELD OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL). SEL IS A PROCESS BY WHICH CHILDREN LEARN TO MANAGE THEIR EMOTIONS, GET ALONG WITH OTHERS, HAVE EMPATHY AND COMPASSION, AND DISCOVER ESSENTIAL TEAMWORK SKILLS. THESE SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT IN LIFE, BUT ALSO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. STUDIES SHOW THAT CHILDREN DO BETTER IN SCHOOL WHEN THEY ARE SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY COMPETENT. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE CURRICULUM IS VIEWED AS A SOCIAL AND INTELLECTUAL PATH TO A NO-KILL NATION, A PATH THAT WILL LEAD TO THE ADOPTION OF A DOG OR CAT FROM A SHELTER AS THE ONLY RESPONSIBLE CHOICE FOR YOUNG ADULTS TO MAKE.
CO-OP BUYING PROGRAM - THIS IS A RESOURCE FOR ANIMAL CARE ORGANIZATIONS. IT HELPS THEM TO REDUCE COSTS BY ENABLING SMALLER ANIMAL SHELTERS TO OBTAIN COST SAVINGS ON SHELTER EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES.
