Part 3
LINE 28: LINE 28: OVERSIGHT OF 1 WEEK OF CONSTRUCTION WORK BY 14 VOLUNTEERS ON A SERVICE TRIP TO COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA. WE WORKED ON A TRAILER BELONGING TO A MOTHER USING A WHEELCHAIR AND HER 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER; WE REPLACED THE TRAILER ROOF AND REPLACED FLOORS AND WALLS DAMAGED BY FLOODING. THE SECOND HOUSE WE WORKED ON WAS IN CLOSE TO IRREPARABLE CONDITION BUT WAS THE ONLY REMAINING POSSESSION OF A MAN WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. WE STARTED MAKING REPAIRS TO THE HOUSE BUT HAD TO LEAVE IT UNFINISHED FOR THE NEXT GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS. ONE OF THE VOLUNTEERS ON THE TRIP WAS A FORMER CONSTRUCTION INTERN, WHO HAD RECEIVED TRAINING FROM SERVCORPS WHEN HE WAS IN THE YOUTHBUILD HARTFORD PROGRAM. MANAGEMENT ESTIMATES THAT A TOTAL OF 560 HOURS OF WORK WERE DONATED. SERVCORPS, INC., A CONNECTICUT NONSTOCK CORPORATION FORMED ON JUNE 9, 1998, CREATES VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AND INTERNSHIPS TO BUILD AND ENCOURAGE A CULTURE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE. USING OUR VOLUNTEERS' EXPERTISE IN CONSTRUCTION, WE IMPROVE THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES BY BUILDING AND REHABILITATING HOUSING LOCALLY, IN DISASTER STRICKEN AREAS, AND IN OTHER COMMUNITIES IN NEED ACROSS THE COUNTRY. OUR PARTICIPANTS FORGE STRONG RELATIONSHIPS, LEARN SKILLS, EMBRACE DIVERSITY, AND EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF SERVING OTHERS.DURING THE FALL OF THIS FISCAL YEAR, SERVCORPS CONTINUED ITS WORK IN THE CITY OF HARTFORD BY OVERSEEING VOLUNTEERS WORKING TO COMPLETE A NEW HOME BUILT IN THE VICTORIAN STYLE THAT IS TYPICAL OF THE ASYLUM HILL NEIGHBORHOOD. THE HOUSE IS NOW FINISHED AND HAS BEEN SOLD TO AN OWNER MAKING 80-125% OF MEDIAN INCOME FOR THE HARTFORD REGION. SERVCORPS COLLABORATIVE PARTNER, NON-PROFIT DEVELOPER NINA (NORTHSIDE INSTITUTIONS NEIGHBORHOOD ALLIANCE) IS PLANNING TO BUILD A SECOND SIMILAR HOME ON THE LOT NEXT DOOR. TWO OF SERVCORPS FORMER CONSTRUCTION INTERNS FROM THE YOUTHBUILD HARTFORD PROGRAM CONTINUE TO WORK FOR CONTRACTORS HIRED BY NINA.SERVCORPS BENEFITS FROM THE USE OF SOME EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES OWNED BY AHCC. SERVCORPS RECEIVES OTHER DONATED SERVICES FROM ITS DIRECTORS AND FRIENDS. OTHER DONATED SERVICES INCLUDE POSTAGE, TELEPHONE, TRANSPORTATION, GRAPHICS, AND BOOKKEEPING. THE VALUE OF THESE SERVICES IS NOT RECORDED, EVEN THOUGH SOME MIGHT MEET THE CRITERIA FOR RECOGNITION UNDER GENERALLY ACCEPTED ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES..EXPENSES $17,597
