CONFERENCES, SEMINARS & OTHER EVENTS TO INFORM AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC, FAMILIES AND PERSONS WITH DOWN SYNDROME. ENCOURAGE PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN MEDICAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONALS CONCERNED WITH DOWN SYNDROME.
THE DS ACT LITERACY AND EDUCATION CENTER, THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND IN THE STATE AND ONE OF ONLY A FEW IN THE COUNTRY, PROVIDES HIGHLY INDIVIDUALIZED RESEARCH-BASED LITERACY INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS WITH A DOWN SYNDROME LEARNING PROFILE. ADDITIONALLY, THE CENTER DRIVES EXCELLENCE IN GENERAL EDUCATION THROUGH PRE-SERVICE TEACHER TRAINING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMING FOR SCHOOL STAFF, AND MENTORING AND INSTRUCTION FOR PARENTS. THE CENTER COLLABORATES WITH ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS TO PUBLISH PEER-REVIEWED PAPERS ON BEST PRACTICES IN LITERACY INSTRUCTION.
THE MEMBER SUPPORT PROGRAMMING CONNECTS PARENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DOWN SYNDROME TO INFORMATION, AND SKILLED MEDICAL AND THERAPEUTIC PROFESSIONALS. PARENTS CONNECT WITH ONE ANOTHER FOR PEER SUPPORT AT SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. DS ACT FACILITATES SPECIFIC SUPPORT GROUPS FOR TEENS, AND ADULTS WITH DOWN SYNDROME, AND FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE RECENTLY RECEIVED A DIAGNOSIS. THE SUNSHINE COMMITTEE LENDS SUPPORT TO FAMILIES FACING ILLNESS, AND, DURING COVID, FINANCIAL HARDSHIP.
AWARENESS AND OUTREACH EFFORTS INCLUDE ANNUAL DONATIONS OF BOOKS ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME TO SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES, PRESENTATIONS TO SCHOOL GROUPS AND AT PUBLIC EVENTS, AND DISTRIBUTION OF MATERIALS TO HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS.
