THE PHILLIPS BROOKS HOUSE ASSOCIATION (PBHA) STRIVES FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE. AS A STUDENT-LED ORGANIZATION, PBHA MOBILIZES VOLUNTEERS IN COLLABORATION WITH BOSTON AND CAMBRIDGE PARTNERS TO ADDRESS GAPS IN OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES. WE DEVELOP STUDENT AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP TO CREATIVELY MEET CRITICAL NEEDS AND ADVOCATE FOR STRUCTURAL CHANGE. PBHA SEEKS TO PROMOTE SOCIAL AWARENESS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AT HARVARD AND BEYOND.

SUMMER PROGRAMS -PBHA OPERATED SUP, A COLLECTIVE OF 10 SUMMER DAY CAMPS. COLLECTIVE PROGRAMS SERVED 429 YOUTH IN BOSTON AND CAMBRIDGE. DUE TO CONTINUED COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS, THE SUP MODEL WAS ADAPTED FOR A HYBRID PROGRAM MADE UP OF ONLINE DELIVERY AS WELL AS IN PERSON. SUPPLIES PROVIDED INCLUDED OUTDOOR PLAY EQUIPMENT, HULA HOOPS, KICKBALLS, POOL NOODLES, BUBBLES. AT-HOME SERVICES PROVIDED GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMMING, STEM AND SCIENCE KITS, AS WELL AS ART PROJECTS. SUP EMPLOYED JUNIOR COUNSELORS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOODS IN WHICH WE SERVE. MANY OF WHOM GO ON TO BECOME SENIOR COUNSELORS AND DIRECTORS.
TERM PROGRAMS -TERM TIME PROGRAMMING CONTINUED TO FOCUS ON RESPONDING TO THE INEQUALITIES THAT THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC REVEALED. WHILE SOME MET EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE, OTHERS REMAINED IN-PERSON SUCH AS THE Y2Y HOMELESS SHELTER. THESE PROGRAMS MET COMMUNITY NEEDS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: ADULT EDUCATION, PRISON EDUCATION, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, ELDER SERVICES, AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT, ARTS ENRICHMENT, MENTORING, ADVOCACY, HEALTH, AND HOUSING. PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED IN CAMBRIDGE, CHINATOWN, DORCHESTER, MISSION HILL, ROXBURY, SOUTH BOSTON, SOUTH END, AND THE GREATER BOSTON CAMBRIDGE REGION.
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS -THE PRISCILLA CHAN STRIDE SERVICE PROGRAM FUND SUPPORTS STUDENTS OF DIVERSE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS. DURING 2021, COHORTS ADOPTED THEIR PROJECTS TO ADDRESS COVID-19. ADAPTATIONS INCLUDED ONLINE MENTORING AND YOUTH PROGRAMMING, ALTERING PROGRAM SIZE, AND PIVOTING FOCUS TO DIRECT NEEDS. IN ADDITION, PBHA HAS LAUNCHED A PILOT PROGRAM CHAN STRIDE FIRST YEAR SCHOLARS. WE NOW HAVE STUDENTS FROM ALL GRADUATING CLASSES PARTICIPATING. THIS ALLOWS A GREATER RANGE OF STUDENTS TO GAIN INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE COLLABORATING WITH INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITY-BASED AGENCIES. THIS OFTEN LEADS TO INCREASED CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE ARENA.
