TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE SAILING INSTRUCTION AND ACCESS TO WATER SPORTS FOR THE NANTUCKET COMMUNITY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
NANTUCKET COMMUNITY SAILING (NCS) OFFERS A FULL RANGE OF YOUTH AND ADULT GROUP SAILING LESSONS, PRIVATE SAILING LESSONS, AND PROVIDES HOURLY RENTALS OF SAILBOATS, KAYAKS AND PADDLEBOARDS TO MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE SAILING PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED FROM TWO LOCATIONS ON NANTUCKET, JETTIES BEACH AND POLPIS HARBOR. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES $150,000 IN YOUTH SAILING SCHOLARSHIPS AND FREE COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO UNDERSERVED CHILDREN AND ADULTS WHO WOULD OTHERWISE NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT ON THE WATER. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION RUNS REGATTAS DURING THE SUMMER TO INCLUDE MORE PEOPLE IN THE SPORT OF SAILING AND AS FUNDRAISING EVENTS TO SUPPORT THE SAILING PROGRAMS. THE ORGANIZATION OPERATES THE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS WITH A FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY, AND COLLABORATES WITH OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO MAINTAIN NANTUCKET'S WATER QUALITY.IN 2023 THE ORGANIZATION HAD 601 ENROLLMENTS IN YOUTH SAILING CLASSES OVER EIGHT WEEKS, REPRESENTING 433 UNIQUE STUDENTS. 35% OF THE STUDENTS ARE YEAR-ROUND NANTUCKET CHILDREN, AND THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED $85,773 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO 111 ISLAND CHILDREN. THE ORGANIZATION'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS SERVED 550 CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH FREE SAILING LESSONS, THERAPEUTIC SAILS, AND WATER SPORTS. NCS ALSO OFFERED PRIVATE SAILING LESSONS AND RENTALS OF SAILBOATS, KAYAKS AND PADDLEBOARDS TO WELL OVER 500 PEOPLE, FROM TODDLERS TO SENIOR CITIZENS.THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY PROGRAM IS YOUTH GROUP SAILING LESSONS, FOR CHILDREN AGES 4 -18, OFFERED IN A RANGE OF SMALL SAILBOATS DEPENDING ON THE STUDENT'S LEVEL. THE SAILING INSTRUCTORS ARE ALL CERTIFIED AND HIGHLY QUALIFIED. THE CURRICULUM ENABLES EACH CHILD TO PROGRESS THROUGH THE SAILING CLASSES AND INCREASE THEIR SKILLS. SAILING INSTRUCTORS PERFORM COMPREHENSIVE STUDENT EVALUATIONS AT THE END OF THE SEASON AND ADVISE THE PARENTS ON A RECOMMENDED SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR. THE SECOND PROGRAM NANTUCKET COMMUNITY SAILING OFFERS IS COMMUNITY OUTREACH, WITH FREE OR HIGHLY SUBSIDIZED SAILING LESSONS AND WATER SPORTS TO UNDERSERVED CHILDREN AND ADULTS. THE OUTREACH CONSTITUENTS INCLUDE TODDLERS AND THEIR PARENT/CAREGIVER, CHILDREN FROM THE NANTUCKET BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL AND/OR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, THE ELDERLY, ADULTS WITH DEHABILITATING ILLNESS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS, AND THE NANTUCKET HIGH SCHOOL SAILING TEAM. THE THIRD PROGRAM AREA IS PROVIDING PRIVATE SAILING LESSONS AND RENTALS OF SAILBOATS AND WATER SPORTS EQUIPMENT, SUCH AS KAYAKS AND PADDLEBOARDS, TO MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC FROM THE JETTIES SAILING CENTER OVER EIGHT WEEKS. IN 2023 NCS OFFERED 394 PRIVATE LESSONS AND RENTED SAILBOATS AND WATER SPORTS EQUIPMENT TO OVER 400 PEOPLE. PEOPLE WHO PURCHASE JETTIES SAILING CENTER MEMBERSHIPS RECEIVE A DISCOUNT ON PRIVATE LESSONS AND FREE SAILBOAT AND WATER SPORTS EQUIPMENT RENTALS.
