THE PURPOSE OF THE SOCIETY IS TO PROVIDE SHELTER, PREVENT CRUELTY TO ANIMALS, AND ADVOCATE FOR THEIR WELFARE. THROUGH HUMANE EDUCATION, THE SOCIETY STRIVES TO ENLIGHTEN THE PUBLIC AND TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ANIMALS AND PEOPLE.

LOWELL HUMANE SOCIETY ANIMAL SHELTER - SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1873, THE LOWELL HUMANE SOCIETY (LHS), A 501(C)3 HUMANE ASSOCIATION, HAS SERVED THE GREATER LOWELL AREA WITH THE MISSION OF PREVENTING CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. OUR EARLY WORK FOCUSED ON INVESTIGATIONS OF CRUELTY COMPLAINTS INVOLVING ANIMALS IN COOPERATION WITH LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND CONCERNED CITIZENS. IN 1930 THE SOCIETY OPENED ITS FIRST ANIMAL SHELTER AND IN 1939, MOVED THE SHELTER TO ITS CURRENT SITE AT 951 BROADWAY STREET IN LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS. TODAY THE LOWELL HUMANE SOCIETY IS AN OPEN-ADMISSION ANIMAL SHELTER SERVING OVER TWO THOUSAND ANIMALS ANNUALLY IN THE GREATER LOWELL, MERRIMACK VALLEY, AND METRO-WEST REGIONS.
