WAYFINDER SCHOOL IS A MAINE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION APPROVED ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL SERVING AT-RISK YOUTH AND TEEN PARENTS IN MAINE. EACH YEAR THEY SERVE 65 MAINE YOUTH WHO ARE AT-RISK OF HIGH SCHOOL NON-COMPLETION. WAYFINDER STUDENTS RECEIVE INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION IN THEIR OWN HOMES AS THEY WORK TOWARD 24 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS IN ACADEMICS, PRACTICAL LIFE SKILLS AND IN SOME CASES, PARENTING. WAYFINDER STUDENTS HAVE TYPICALLY STRUGGLED IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL SETTINGS AND BENEFIT FROM WAYFINDER'S INDIVIDUALIZED, STRENGTHS-BASED, STUDENT-CENTERED APPROACH. STUDENTS RECEIVE REFERRALS FOR ADDITIONAL SERVICES AS NEEDED. THEY ALSO PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS, FIELD TRIPS AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER PROJECTS. EACH GRADUATE MUST COMPLETE A CAPSTONE PROJECT DESIGNED TO ADDRESS A SPECIFIC CHALLENGE OR GOAL THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED FOR THEMSELVES. IN RECENT YEARS, 70% OF WAYFINDER GRADUATES HAVE PURSUED POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION AND/OR SECURED EMPLOYMENT WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF GRADUATION. MORE THAN 80% REPORT INCREASED CONFIDENCE, LIFE SKILLS, JOB SKILLS, COMMUNITY CONNECTION AND WORK-READINESS.
