MAINTAIN AN OFFICE STAFFED BY 2 PERSONS WHO ARE TRAINED AND CERTIFIED BY THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION AND THE V. F. W. ORGANIZATION AS BEING CAPABLE OF PROVIDING ASSISTANCE TO VETERANS WHO ARE ENTITLED TO VARIOUS BENEFITS FROM THE U. S. VETERANS ADMINISTRATION. THE DEPARTMENT'S HOSPITAL CHAIRMAN AND HIS COMMITTEE SPEND AT LEAST 80 HOURS PER MONTH ASSISTING PATIENTS AT THE V. A. HOSPITALS. THE VFW ALSO PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE BEALS HOUSE ON THE HOSPITAL GROUNDS, WHICH IS FOR USE, AT A MINIMAL COST, BY THE FAMILIES OF HOSPITALIZED VETERANS AT THE V. A. HOSPITAL.
TO PLAN, ORGANIZE, AND CONDUCT THE ANNUAL CONVENTION AND MEETING OF THE MEMBERS OF THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS FROM THE STATE OF MAINE. EACH OF THE 46 LOCAL V.F.W. POSTS THROUGHOUT THE STATE ARE REPRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL MEETING. IN ADDITION TO CONDUCTING MEETINGS OF ALL COMMITTEES, THE DELEGATES GIVE CONSIDERATION TO THE ORGANIZATIONAL, BUSINESS, AND FINANCIAL MATTERS AFFECTING THE DEPARTMENT FOR THE ENSUING YEAR AND THE ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS IS CONDUCTED.
PROVIDED AWARDS AND RECOGNITION FOR STUDENTS FROM THE ENTIRE STATE OF MAINE WHO COMPETE IN THE "PATRIOT'S PEN" ESSAY CONTEST AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AND THE "VOICE OF DEMOCRACY" ESSAY CONTEST AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. APPROXIMATELY 5,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THESE ESSAY CONTESTS WHICH FOCUS ON LEARNING PRINCIPLES OF DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM.
