EDUCATIONAL AND PUBLIC PROGRAMSOUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ANNUALLY SERVE 40,000 K-12 CHILDREN WHO LEARN ABOUT THE OCEAN FROM A PERSPECTIVE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, EDUCATION AND MATH. OUR EDUCATORS VISIT SCHOOLS ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REACHING THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN. OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ALIGN WITH THE CALIFORNIA SCIENCE STANDARDS.
COLLECTIONSTHE STEELE MODEL PAVILION FEATURES A FIRST CLASS COLLECTION OF 15TH-18TH CENTURY WOODEN TALL SHIPS. THE STEELE EDUCATIONAL THEATER HOSTS MONTHLY LECTURES BY WORLD CLASS SPEAKERS WHO TALK ABOUT NEW OCEAN RELATED DISCOVERIES. TOPICS INCLUDE ENDANGERED MARINE SPECIES, MAPPING OF THE OCEAN BOTTOM, OCEAN ACIDIFICATION, FISHERIES, AND EXPLORATION OF THE DEEPEST PARTS OF UNDERSEA WORLD WITH AUTONOMOUS ROBOTS. K-12 CHILDREN USE THE EDUCATIONAL THEATER SPACE FOR HANDS-ON STEM PROJECT BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES.
LEARNING SPACESOUR OCEAN LITERACY CENTER FEATURES DOZENS OF HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN TO MAKE THEIR OWN DISCOVERIES ABOUT THE OCEAN. OUR INNOVATION LAB ALLOWS K-12 CHLDREN TO MAKE PROJECTS AND WE PROVIDE THE TIME, TOOLS AND SPACE FOR THEM TO DO SO. CHILDREN CAN DESIGN AND BUILD AS UNDERWATER ROBOTS AND LEARN TO USE 3D PRINTERS AND WRITE COMPUTER CODE. OUR OUTDOOR SCIENCE PATIO IS USED BY THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN ON FIELD TRIPS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO CONDUCT HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTS WITH AGE APPROPRIATE TOOLS AND SUPPLIES.
