THE VARIETY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB (VBGC) IS A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR KIDS (AGES 5 TO 17 YEARS) AND PROPELS THEM TO LEARN SOCIAL SKILLS, IDENTIFY POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES, AS WELL AS ACHIEVE PERSONAL, ACADEMIC, ATHLETIC AND OTHER WORTHY GOALS. VBGC PROVIDES SOCIAL, RECREATIONAL AND ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES AND COUNSELING SERVICES IN A CONTROLLED SETTING TO DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS. SINCE 1949, THE VARIETY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB HAS RESPONDED TO THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN IN THE BOYLE HEIGHTS/EAST LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY OFFERING ACADEMIC AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, TUTORING AND MENTORING, SPORTS AND AQUATICS PROGRAMS, ARTS AND CRAFTS, A COMPUTER LEARNING CENTER AND LIBRARY, SOCIAL RECREATION, COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS, AND SPECIAL EVENTS TO AWARD MEMBERS' ACHIEVEMENTS. FOR ALMOST 70 YEARS, VBGC HAS PROVIDED A REFUGE FOR CHILDREN WHO STRUGGLE DAILY WITH REAL LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES OF POVERTY, UNDER-RESOURCED NEIGHBORHOODS, LOW EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT, GANG VIOLENCE, SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND POOR HEALTH OUTCOMES. ANNUALLY, OVER 2,500 KIDS PARTICIPATE IN A PROGRAM OR SERVICE VBGC OFFERS.
