ANIMAL CARE AND ANIMAL HEALTH REID PARK ZOO'S LARGEST PROGRAM AREA IS PROVIDING THE BEST LIFE FOR THE ANIMALS UNDER OUR CARE. REID PARK ZOO'S HIGHLY DEDICATED ANIMAL CARE AND VETERINARY TEAM WORK TO ENSURE THE ZOO'S COLLECTION OF NEARLY 400 ANIMALS IS HEALTHY AND THRIVING. CARE IS PROVIDED IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT, WITH CHOICE AND CONTROL FOR THE ANIMALS AND IN A PROTECTED CONTACT SETTING TO ENSURE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF WELLNESS FOR THE ANIMALS AND STAFF. REID PARK ZOO PARTICIPATES IN THE SPECIES SURVIVAL PLAN (SSP) THROUGH THE ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS (AZA) TO ENSURE GENETIC DIVERSITY AND HEALTHY POPULATIONS.EDUCATION PROGRAMS - REID PARK ZOO'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE COMMITTED TO CONNECTING OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY WITH WILD ANIMALS AND WILD PLACES, TO PROMOTE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ZOO'S ROLE IN ANIMAL CARE AND CONSERVATION, AND TO INSTILL RESPONSIBILITY FOR INDIVIDUAL CHOICES THAT HELP PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. PROGRAMS THIS YEAR INCLUDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS OFFERED VIRTUALLY AND IN PERSON EITHER AT THE ZOO OR AT THE SCHOOLS, IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL PROGRAMS AND ANIMAL EXPERIENCES FOR NON-SCHOOL GROUPS, OUTREACH PROGRAMS TO COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND SUMMER AND WINTER CAMPS. IN TOTAL, WE REACHED 14,809 PEOPLE, 61% (9,057 PEOPLE) RECEIVED ZOO EDUCATION EXPERIENCES FOR FREE DUE TO GRANT FUNDING OR PROGRAMS PROVIDED AT NO COST.GUEST EXPERIENCES IN 2021-2022 REID PARK ZOO SERVED 568,987 GUESTS AT THE ZOO WITH 16,258 MEMBERSHIP HOUSEHOLDS. 35,821 GUESTS ATTENDED THE ZOO THROUGH COMBINED FREE AND REDUCED ADMISSION PROGRAMS. THESE PROGRAMS CREATE A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE FOR GUESTS, INSPIRING A LIFELONG LOVE OF SCIENCE LEARNING, ANIMALS AND NATURE. AS AN ACCREDITED AZA INSTITUTION, REID PARK ZOO IS AN IMPORTANT RESOURCE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO UNDERSTAND WILDLIFE AND THE NEED TO CONSERVE WILD ANIMALS AND WILD PLACES. GUESTS LEARN ABOUT THE IMPORTANT ROLE ZOOS HAVE AS LEADERS IN CONSERVATION RESEARCH, EXPERIENCING A STRONGER CONNECTION TO NATURE, TO TAKE CONSERVATION ACTION, CONSIDER THEIR ROLE IN FINDING ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTION AND SEE THEMSELVES AS A PART OF THE SOLUTION AS A RESULT OF THEIR VISIT.ZOO IMPROVEMENTS IN ADDITION TO THE MASTER PLAN CONSTRUCTION DESIGN, WE COMPLETED SEVERAL ZOO IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS. THEY INCLUDE ADDING NEW DRINKING WATER FOUNTAINS IN THE ZOO, UPGRADING ANIMAL KITCHEN, MODIFYING ANIMAL AMBASSADOR HABITAT IN CLC, REPLACING CARPET IN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES, UPGRADING RESTROOMS NEAR FRONT GATE, AND MANY OTHER SMALL PROJECTS.CONSERVATION REID PARK ZOO BECAME THE LEADER OF THE ANDEAN HIGHLAND FLAMINGO SAVING ANIMALS FROM EXTINCTION (SAFE) PROGRAM. AS PROGRAM LEADER, REID PARK ZOO COORDINATES THE RESEARCH PROGRAM AS WELL AS THE EDUCATION AND CONSERVATION MATERIALS USED THROUGHOUT AZA ZOOS. REID PARK ZOO AWARDS GRANTS TO CONSERVATION PROJECTS TO SAFE WILD ANIMALS AND WILD PLACES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
