TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH, INDEPENDENCE AND SOCIAL INTEGRATION OF PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES THROUGH SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATION PROGRAMS.

YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM PROVIDES YEAR-ROUND SPORTS AND RECREATION ACTIVITES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES AGES 5-20. ADAPTIVE SPORTS ACTIVITES OFFERED ON A WEEKLY BASIS INCLUDE WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL, POWER SOCCER, CYCLING AND SLED HOCKEY. TRANSPORTATION TO PROGRAM ACTIVITES IS PROVIDED. YOUTH TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN LOCAL AND NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS, CLINICS AND SPORTING EVENTS. THE PROGRAM HELPS PARTICIPANTS INCREASE STRENGTH, FITNESS AND MOBILITY, LEARN TEAMWORK AND SPORTSMANSHIP, CONNECT WITH PEERS AND POSITIVE ADULT ROLE MODELS, DEVELOP SELF-CONFIDENCE, INDEPENDENCE LEADERSHIP AND SOCIAL SKILLS. LAST YEAR THE PROGRAM SERVED 75 YOUTH THROUGH ONGOING ACTIVITIES AND INTRODUCED 200 YOUNG PEOPLE TO ADAPTIVE SPORTS THROUGH OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, SCHOOL EXHIBITIONS AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
BORP'S ADAPTED CYCLING CENTER PROGRAM LOCATED AT AQUATIC PARK IN BERKELEY IS OPEN 3 DAYS A WEEK AND IS EQUIPPED WITH A FLEET OF 120 ADAPTIVE BIKES. THE CYCLING PROGRAM PROVIDES INDIVIDUALS WITH MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF DISABILITIES ACCESS TO REGULAR OUTDOOR EXERCISE ON A YEAR-ROUND BASIS. ADAPTIVE KAYAKING ACTIVITIES WERE ADDED LAST YEAR AT THE CENTER. THE PROGRAM SERVED OVER 350 PARTICIPANTS LAST YEAR THROUGH OPEN HOURS AND ORGANIZED GROUP RIDES FOR YOUTH, ADULTS, FAMILIES, VETERANS, AND TANDEM RIDES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS.
BORP FITNESS CENTER PROVIDES A FULL MENU OF WEEKLY FITNESS CLASSES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS. CLASSES OFFERED INCLUDE ADAPTIVE YOGA, DANCE, TAI CHI, UPPER BODY STRENGTHENING, ARTHRITIS EXERCISE, STRETCHING AND FITNESS. IN RESPONSE TO THE SHELTER-IN-PLACE RESTRICTIONS, VIRTUAL FITNESS CLASSES WERE ADDED IN 2020. THE PROGRAM SERVED OVER 500 CONSUMERS LAST YEAR AND IS LOCATED AT THE ED ROBERTS CAMPUS.
