THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO ENSURE A VIBRANT COMMUNITY SPACE DEDICATED TO THE JOY OF READING, THE DISCOVERY OF IDEAS, AND THE POWER OF INFORMATION BY OWNING, OPERATING AND MAINTAINING THE LIBRARY BUILDING AND GROUNDS. THE FACILITIES WERE DONATED BY THE PEOPLE OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND IN 1961 AND CONTINUE TO BE FUNDED BY CONTRIBUTIONS RAISED THROUGH EFFORTS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS. THE LIBRARY IS OPERATED BY KITSAP REGIONAL LIBRARY, A SEPARATE INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATION, WHICH PROVIDES MATERIALS, STAFF, AND TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT.

DURING 2021:IHLAND WAY BUILDINGS WERE MAINTAINED AND FULLY TENANTED. REPAIRS AND REPAVING WORK TO THE PARKING LOT WAS EXPLORED AND BIDS OBTAINED, BUT WORK WAS DEFERRED UNTIL 2022 OR 2023. BAINBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY SPONSORED THE PROGRAM "BOOK LOVER'S NIGHT OUT" CONSISTING OF A PANEL DISCUSSION BY 5 LOCAL (BAINBRIDGE ISLAND AND SEATTLE) AUTHORS MODERATED BY GEORGE SHANNON. THE PROGRAM WAS ACCOMPLISHED VIA ZOOM DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. IN ADDITION BPL SPONSORED 6 "FIRST FRIDAY" ARTS WALK RECEPTIONS AT THE LIBRARY.THROUGHOUT 2021, BPL CONTINUED TO COVER THE OPERATING COSTS OF THE LIBRARY BUILDING, ACCOMPLISHED FURTHER REPAIR WORK ON THE LIBRARY BUILDING AS RECOMMENDED BY THE 2019 CHRIS UGLES REPORT, MAINTAINED THE GROUNDS THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE VOLUNTEER GROUP "FRIDAY TIDIES AND SOLICITED BIDS FOR THE REPAIR AND/OR REPLACEMENT OF THE GAZEBO STRUCTURE LOCATED ON THE LIBRARY GROUNDS. BIDS WERE RECEIVED FROM 3 CONTRACTORS AND WERE UNDER REVIEW AT YEAR END. THE LIBRARY ALSO PREPARED A REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL COVERING CONSTRUCTIONS OF A NEW RECYCLING ENCLOSURE AND REPLACEMENT OF 2 EXISTING ENCLOSURES FOR TRASH AND HVAC IN ACCORDANCE WITH PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS PREPARED BY A VOLUNTEER ARCHITECT IN 2020. BIDS WERE RECEIVED FROM 2 CONTRACTORS AND A THIRD BID WAS BEING SOLICITED AT YEAR END.
