Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
THE WORK OF OUR ORGANIZATION FOCUSES ON THE CREATION AND DEPLOYMENT OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO IDENTIFY POOR AIR QUALITY IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. IN THIS PAST YEAR, WE HAVE WORKED TO DEPLOY A PROTOTYPE OF OUR TECHNOLOGIES ON THE CAMPUS OF NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY FUNDED BY AN NC STATE GRANT. WE HAVE ALSO DEVELOPED A PUBLIC-FACING WEB PORTAL, WITH USEFUL GRAPHICAL DISPLAYS OF COLLECTED POLLUTION DATA. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE WORKED WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND OTHER NONPROFITS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA TO UNDERSTAND THE MOST USEFUL CAPABILITIES AND APPLICATIONS OF OUR AIR QUALITY SENSING TECHNOLOGY. WE HAVE BEGUN TO PLAN DEPLOYMENTS OF OUR AIR QUALITY SENSORS IN COMMUNITIES WHERE IT WILL BE THE MOST USEFUL, PARTICULARLY IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
WE ARE CURRENTLY DEVELOPING A PROOF-OF-CONCEPT OF OUR DESIGN AND SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGIES ON THE CAMPUS OF NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY (NC STATE) CAMPUS, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE NC STATE SUSTAINABILITY FUND AND PARK SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM. CURRENTLY, THERE IS NO DATA ON OUTDOOR AIR QUALITY ON NC STATE'S CAMPUS. YET, THERE ARE MANY STAFF, STUDENTS, AND FACULTY WHO MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO POOR AIR QUALITY. THEREFORE, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING TO COLLECT AND ANALYZE A LARGE DATASET ON AIR QUALITY ON CAMPUS AND PROVIDE A PUBLIC PORTAL FOR MEMBERS OF NC STATE'S COMMUNITY TO VIEW OUR RESULTS. IN 2020, WE DEVELOPED KEY TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITIES FOR THIS PROJECT, INCLUDING SOFTWARE CODE TO RUN OUR SENSORS AND THE BASIC SENSOR ENCLOSURE DESIGN. WE ALSO DEVELOPED AN INITIAL DEPLOYMENT PLAN, OF 50 SENSORS AT RANDOMLY GENERATED POINTS ACROSS CAMPUS. BY TAKING SAMPLES IN MANY LOCATIONS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO GET A MORE ACCURATE UNDERSTANDING OF THE AIR QUALITY OF THE AREA. WE DETERMINED THAT THE SENSORS WILL STAY DEPLOYED FOR A FULL YEAR TO GATHER DATA OVER TIME. THIS FIRST USE OF OUR TECHNOLOGY WILL BE A TRIAL RUN AND ACT AS PROOF OF TECHNOLOGY. WE WILL THEN UPLOAD THE DATA COLLECTED TO OUR WEBSITE FOR THE PUBLIC TO SEE. DURING THIS YEAR, WE PROTOTYPED THE BASIC SERVER INFRASTRUCTURE TO HOST THIS PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE WEBSITE. IN TOTAL, DURING 2020, WE COMPLETED THE INITIAL DESIGN PHASE OF THIS PROJECT, WITH THE AIM OF SUCCESSFULLY DEPLOYING OUR SENSORS ON CAMPUS IN 2021.
