THE PRIMARY PROGRAM OF THE LEWIS & CLARK LITERACY COUNCIL IS A ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING PROGRAM THAT PAIRS TRAINED VOLUNTEERS TO TUTOR ADULTS IN LITERACY AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS. IN 2017, 66 STUDENTS MADE ACCOMPLISHMENTS SUCH AS OBTAINING BETTER EMPLOYMENT, ENTERING OTHER EDUCATION OR TRAINING, OBTAINING CITIZENSHIP, VOTING, EARNING A DRIVER'S LICENSE, AND INCREASING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. THESE STUDENTS WERE SUPPORTED BY NUMEROUS VOLUNTEERS, INCLUDING 12 TUTORS AND 22 BOOK PALS. THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ALSO FACILITATED A WEEKLY CONVERSATION CLASS FOR WOMEN LEARNING ENGLISH. OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, EIGHT WOMEN PARTICIPATED REGULARLY IN THIS CLASS AND PRACTICED SPEAKING ABOUT TOPICS INCLUDING AMERICAN CULTURE, HOLIDAYS, LITERATURE, AND SAFETY SKILLS.
