THE INSTITUTE (ISJL) SUPPORTS, CONNECTS, AND CELEBRATES JEWISH LIFE IN THE SOUTH.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES:THE EDUCATION DIVISION SUPPORTS CONGREGATIONAL RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS, LARGE AND SMALL. 65 CONGREGATIONAL SCHOOLS UTILIZED THE ISJL'S COMPREHENSIVE, TRANS-DENOMINATIONAL RELIGIOUS SCHOOL CURRICULUM DESIGNED TO PROMOTE A COMMON BODY OF JEWISH KNOWLEDGE DELIVERED BY ITINERANT EDUCATORS, EITHER VIRTUALLY OR IN-PERSON. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE ONGOING COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE TEACHERS. ALMOST THIRTY FIVE HUNDRED STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN OUR PROGRAM THIS YEAR. WE ALSO OFFER SECULAR PROGRAMS SUCH AS PEER MEDIATION TRAINING FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS AND STUDENT LITERACY INITIATIVES. OUR PROGRAM WAS VIRTUAL THIS YEAR AS WE WORKED WITH STUDENT MEDIATORS FROM 10 SCHOOLS TO HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF THEIR FELLOW STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. OUR LITERACY PROGRAMS INCLUDING OUR SPRING BREAK LITERACY CAMP WERE VIRTUAL THIS YEAR.
SPIRITUAL: WE SERVE THE SMALLEST JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN OUR REGION SPECIFICALLY, INDIVIDUALS AND CONGREGATIONS WITHOUT ANY LOCAL FULL-TIME CLERGY. OUR CLERGY GOES ON THE ROAD TO LEAD SHABBAT AND HOLIDAY WORSHIP. WE OFFER VIRTUAL PREPARATION AND IN-PERSON OFFICIATION FOR LIFECYCLE MOMENTS SUCH AS B'NEI MITZVAH, WEDDINGS AND CONVERSIONS. ISJL RABBIS AND STAFF PROVIDE FREE INTERACTIVE TEXT STUDY OPPORTUNITIES OVER ZOOM AND STREAMING SERVICES AND SEDER CELEBRATIONS. WHEN SOMEONE NEEDS JEWISH SPIRITUAL SUPPORT, WE'RE HERE TO ANSWER THE CALL.
CULTURE: CELEBRATING JEWISH CULTURE AND PRESERVING THE UNIQUE STORIES OF JEWISH LIFE IN THE SOUTH IS AT THE HEART OF THE ISJL'S WORK. WE BRING JEWISH CULTURAL EVENTS TO COMMUNITIES THROUGH OUR SOUTHERN STATES JEWISH PROGRAMMING SERIES. WE PROVIDE ACCESSIBLE JEWISH CULTURAL EXPERIENCES THAT APPEAL TO DIVERSE AUDIENCES. WE CELEBRATE THE RICH LEGACY OF JEWISH LIFE IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH THROUGH PUBLIC PROGRAMS, SHARED EXPERIENCES, HISTORIC PRESERVATION AND MORE. FROM SOUTHERN JEWISH HERITAGE TOURS AND HANDS ON ALTERNATIVE BREAK SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, WE OFFER DYNAMIC PROGRAMMING AIMED AT BOTH JEWISH AND SECULAR AUDIENCES TO BRING SOUTHERN JEWISH HISTORY AND HERITAGE TO LIFE. OUR GOAL IS ALSO TO PRESERVE THE STORIES OF JEWISH LIFE IN THE SOUTH AND MAKE THEM AVAILABLE TO A WIDER AUDIENCE, THROUGH RESOURCES LIKE OUR FREE ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SOUTHERN JEWISH COMMUNITIES. THE ONLINE WEB-BASED ARCHIVE WITH A HISTORY OF EVERY SOUTHERN JEWISH COMMUNITY RECEIVES ALMOST 100,000 VIEWS EACH YEAR.
