THE MISSION OF RUFFNER MOUNTAIN NATURE COALITION IS TO ADVANCE THE UNDERSTANDING OF ECOLOGY IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD. WE PROMOTE EDUCATION AND APPRECIATION OF NATURE THROUGH PUBLIC PROGRAMMING, HABITAT RESTORATION AND MAINTENANCE OF A NATURE PRESERVE.

SITUATED LESS THAN 8 MILES FROM DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, NEAR APPALACHIAS SOUTHERNMOST BORDER, RUFFNER MOUNTAIN COMPRISES 1,038 ACRES OF PROTECTED HABITAT THAT HAS BEEN FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR OVER 40 YEARS. HOME TO HUNDREDS OF SPECIES OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS WITH SEVERAL AREAS OF DISTINCT, HIGH BIODIVERSITY, THIS ABUNDANT FOREST PROVIDES SIGNIFICANT CARBON SEQUESTRATION PROTECTING THE AIR FOR THE METROPOLITAN AREA, AND IS THE HEADWATERS FOR THE VILLAGE CREEK AND SHADES CREEK WATERSHEDS. OUR PROGRAMS FOSTER CLEAR AWARENESS AND CONCERN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, AND ENCOURAGE PARTICIPANTS TO LEARN TO IDENTIFY, PREVENT, AND SOLVE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS THAT WILL NOT ONLY ENHANCE HABITAT FOR WILDLIFE SPECIES, BUT ALSO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR RESIDENTS OF ALABAMA.
