THE NEWS LEADERS ASSOCIATION (NLA) IS A MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION OF NEWS EDITORS. NLA FOCUSES ON OPEN GOVERNMENT AND THE FIRST AMENDMENT. NLA:-REPRESENTS NEW LEADERS' POINTS OF VIEW IN THE NEWS INDUSTRY, THE AMERICAN POLITICAL PROCESS AND SOCIETY.-AT THE FOREFRONT OF EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT AND STATE SHIELD LAWS AND THE CALL TO ENACT A FEDERAL SHIELD LAW.-CREATED SUNSHINE WEEK, AN EFFORT TO EMPOWER CITIZENS TO HOLD GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE AND OPEN.-FOSTERS EXCELLENCE THROUGH ITS NLA AWARDS, WHICH ARE AMONG THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS IN THE PROFESSION.-SPEAKS OUT WHEN JOURNALISTS ARE THREATENED.

ANNUAL CONVENTION - NLA HOSTS AN ANNUAL CONVENTION WHICH ALLOWS MEMBERS AND GUESTS TO PARTICIPATE IN A CHALLENGING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT CONFRONTS PROBLEMS FACING NEWS JOURNALISTS. TOPICS INCLUDED: WAR AND TERRORISM, FREEDOM OF INFORMATION, DIVERSITY, READERSHIP, ETHICS AND GOOD WRITING AND REPORTING. BECAUSE OF THE COVID PANDEMIC, THE ASSOCIATION DID NOT HOLD ITS ANNUAL IN-PERSON CONVENTION IN 2020. INSTEAD, IT HELD VIRTUAL PROGRAMS FOR MEMBERS, HELD FOCUS GROUPS WITH JOURNALISTS AND AFFINITY GROUPS TO REVAMP THE ANNUAL DIVERSITY SURVEY AND CREATE NEW VIRTUAL DEI PROGRAMS AND OVERSAW THE JUDGING AND COORDINATION FOR NLA'S ANNUAL JOURNALISM AWARDS
MEMBERSHIP: NLA'S MEMBERS ARE INDIVIDUALS, AND ITS BOARD IS ELECTED BY MEMBERS. MANY OF NLA'S INITIATIVES ARE CARRIED OUT BY ITS COMMITTEES. IT ALSO OPERATES PROJECTS COORDINATED BY STAFF WITH ADVICE FROM COMMITTEES AND THE BOARD. THE NEWS LEADERS ASSOCIATION ADVANCES THE CAUSE OF QUALITY, INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM. FOUNDED IN 1922 TO DEFEND THE PROFESSION FROM UNJUST ASSAULT, NLA IS PRIMARILY AN ORGANIZATION OF NEWSROOM LEADERS IN THE UNITED STATES, WITH MEMBERS FROM CANADA AND MEXICO, CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA WELCOME AS WELL.
