THE NBFRET IS A PRIVATE TRUST ORGANIZED FOR CHARITABLE PURPOSES AND IS CLASSIFIED AS A "TYPE III" SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION OPERATING EXCLUSIVELY FOR CHARITABLE, SCIENTIFIC, LITERARY AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES.

GRANT AWARDS:TEN (10) GRANTS WERE AWARDED TO TEN (10) PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS AT TEN (10) INSTITUTIONS FOR EARLY-CAREER SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND STRATEGIC RESEARCH AND EDUCATION. THE RESEARCH FINDINGS ARE PUBLISHED BY AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF BLOOD BANKS AND OTHER BLOOD TRANSFUSION AND SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS AND PERIODICALS.


IN JULY OF EACH YEAR, A "REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS NOTICE IS ISSUED FOR THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM, IN THE FIELDS OF TRANSFUSION MEDICINE, CELLULAR THERAPIES AND PATIENT BLOOD MANAGEMENT. APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED FROM JULY THROUGH DECEMBER 1ST. IN OCTOBER, THE GRANT PROGRAM IS MARKETED DURING THE AABB ANNUAL MEETING AND IT OFFERS CME CREDITS FOR ATTENDEES TO THE GRANT RECIPIENTS' LECTURE AND LUNCHEON WHERE THREE PRIOR GRANT RECIPIENTS PRESENT THEIR RESEARCH. BASED UPON THE RESEARCH PROJECT AREAS SUBMITTED, THE GRANT REVIEW COMMITTEE CHAIR DEVELOPS THE COMMITTEE TO ENSURE THAT THE COMMITTEE CONSISTS OF THE EXPERTISE NEEDED TO REVIEW THE SUBMITTED RESEARCH. THE APPLICATION REVIEW PROCESS BEGINS AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.
