THE PAIDEIA INSTITUTE (PI) AIMS TO PROMOTE THE STUDY OF THE HUMANITIES THROUGH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING IN EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES. BY 'HUMANISTIC' PI UNDERSTANDS NOT ONLY THE MATERIAL THAT IS TAUGHT, NAMELY THOSE ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES WHICH STUDY THE PRODUCTIONS OF HUMAN CULTURE IN DISTINCTION FROM THE NATURAL OR SOCIAL SCIENCES, BUT ALSO HOW THAT MATERIAL IS PRESENTED.

CLASSICAL TOURS IN 2020-2021 THE PURPOSE OF THESE TOURS IS TO SPREAD KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIENT GREECE AND ROME, CLASSICAL ANTIQUES AND THE IDEALS OF HUMANISTIC STUDY TO A BROADER BASE THAN CAN BE SERVED BY OUR INDEPENDENT PROGRAMMING AND TO MAKE AVAILABLE OUR LOCAL KNOWLEDGE (OF THE LANGUAGES, VENDORS, SITES AND MUSEUMS) TO HELP INSTRUCTORS OF LATIN AND GREEK AT HIGH SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES CREATE TRIPS TO EUROPE FOR THEIR OWN STUDENTS. THESE TOURS WERE OFFERED TO SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. THE LENGTH OF EACH TRIP VARIED FROM 7 TO 10 DAYS. IT SERVICED 20 STUDENTS TAKING PART IN 1 TOUR.


TELEPAIDEIA OFFERS COURSES ON CLASSICAL HUMANITIES, SUCH AS TEACHING LATIN AND GREEK ON-LINE, TWO LATIN COURSES IN FRANCE, A GREEK COURSE IN GREECE, A CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK, AND MANY OTHER EVENTS. THESE PROGRAMS VARY FROM ONE-DAY EVENTS TO TWO-WEEK COURSES. THESE PROGRAMS ALLOW TEACHERS AND STUDENTS OF LATIN TO EXPLORE AND PRACTICE THE ACTIVE USE OF LATIN IN THE CLASSROOM. IN 2021, APPROXIMATELY 450 PARTICIPANTS WERE SERVICED.


THE PAIDEIA INSTITUTE IS COMMITTED TO EXPANDING ACCESS TO THE CLASSICAL HUMANITIES AND TO BUILDING AND SUPPORTING A NETWORK OF INDIVIDUALS WHO CARE DEEPLY ABOUT ANCIENT LANGUAGES, LITERATURE, HISTORY, AND ART. PAIDEIA'S OUTREACH INITIATIVES FALL INTO THREE MAIN CATEGORIES: TEACHING LITERACY WITH LATIN, CAREERS FOR CLASSICISTS, AND PUBLICATIONS.


THE PAIDEIA INSTITUTE RUNS VARIOUS "LIVING IN" PROGRAMS. THIS INCLUDES LIVING GREEK IN GREECE, LIVING LATIN IN PARIS, LIVING LATIN IN ROME AND LIVING LATIN IN ROME FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THESE PROGRAMS OFFER THE UNUSUAL PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH OF TREATING LATIN AS A SPOKEN LANGUAGE, COMBINED WITH EXTENSIVE VISITS TO ANCIENT ROMAN SITES. THE COURSE LASTED FIVE WEEKS AND INVOLVED TWO HOURS OF CLASSROOM TIME PER DAY, PLUS TWO OR THREE HOUR SITE VISITS THREE DAYS A WEEK AND ONE AND A HALF HOUR PRACTICE SESSIONS TWICE A WEEK, FOR A TOTAL OF 21 HOURS OF FORMAL TEACHING PER WEEK. THERE WERE FOUR DAY- TRIPS TO SITES OUTSIDE OF ROME ON SATURDAYS AND A THREE DAY WEEKEND TRIP TO SITES NEAR AND IN NAPLES. THE INSTITUTE OFFERED HOUSING IN SHARED APARTMENTS AROUND ROME. IN 2021, 50 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE COURSE AND THE INSTITUTE OFFERED FOUR FULL AND TWO PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.
