DUE TO THE COVID19 PANDEMIC, THE HENRY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC MARCH 9, 2020, REMAINING CLOSED THROUGH FEBRUARY 26, 2021. FOR THE DURATION OF THE PHYSICAL CLOSURE, THE HENRY PURSUED HEIGHTENED ENGAGEMENT WITH COMMUNITIES THROUGH #HENRYATHOME, AN EXPANDED SUITE OF REMOTE OFFERINGS AND COMMUNICATIONS. DURING 2021, 13 EXHIBITIONS WERE MOUNTED, 9 ONSITE AND 4 IN PUBLIC SPACES. THE MAJOR PUBLIC EXHIBITION DURING THE CLOSURE WAS SET IN MOTION: A PUBLIC ART EXHIBITION COMPRISED OF INSPIRING IMAGES INSTALLED AS PUBLIC ART ON KING COUNTY METRO BUS BOARDS FEATURING ARTISTS LIVING AND WORKING IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.THE HENRY REOPENED ON FEBRUARY 27, 2021 WITH A NEW SLATE OF EXHIBITIONS. THESE EXHIBITIONS GENERATED NEW SCHOLARSHIP, CONNECTED THE PUBLIC WITH ARTISTS WORKING AT THE GLOBAL LEVEL, AND ADDED TO THE CREATIVE CAPITAL OF THE REGION. THE HENRY FURTHERED COMMITMENT TO EMERGING TALENT THROUGH ORGANIZING AND PRESENTING THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON MASTERS OF FINE ARTS AND MASTERS OF DESIGN EXHIBITION.REPRESENTATIVE EXHIBITIONS INCLUDED:--HOSTILE TERRAIN 94, A PARTICIPATORY ART EXHIBITION CREATED BY THE UNDOCUMENTED MIGRATION PROJECT DRAWING AWARENESS TO THE REALITIES OF THE DEATHS OCCURRING AT THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER.--BAMBITCHELL: BUGS & BEASTS BEFORE THE LAW, AN EXPERIMENTAL ESSAY FILM THAT EXPLORES THE HISTORY AND LEGACY OF THE "ANIMAL TRIALS" THAT TOOK PLACE IN MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN EUROPE AND ITS COLONIES.--ILLUSTRATING INJUSTICE: THE POWER OF PRINT HIGHLIGHTED THE POWER OF PRINTED MATERIAL TO COMMUNICATE SOCIAL AND SYSTEMIC INJUSTICES.--PLURAL POSSIBILITIES & THE FEMALE BODY EXPLORED THE GENDERED CONSTRUCTION AND DECONSTRUCTION OF THE FEMALE BODY AND ITS REPRESENTATION.--GARY SIMMONS: THE ENGINE ROOM EXPLORED RACIAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL POLITICS, RIFFING OFF TRADITIONAL AMERICAN SUBURBAN GARAGE ARCHITECTURE AND REFERENCING THE GARAGE AS A SITE FOR INVENTION, CREATIVITY, AND EXPERIMENTATION, PARTICULARLY FOR MUSIC/BANDS. THE HENRY HAS A GROWING COLLECTION OF IMPORTANT WORKS FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT, INCLUDING THE RENOWNED JOSEPH AND ELAINE MONSEN COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY, AND NEW ACQUISITIONS REFLECTING THE DYNAMIC RANGE OF CONTEMPORARY ART BEING CREATED WORLDWIDE. SUB-COLLECTIONS OF NOTE ARE: THE STIMSON-BULLITT COLLECTION OF 19TH CENTURY PRINTS; JAPANESE FOLK POTTERY AND NORTHWEST CERAMICS; THE THOMAS AND FRANCES BLAKEMORE COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS; THE BURT AND JANE BERMAN COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART; THE WILLIAM AND RUTH TRUE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART; THE ALBERT FELDMANN COLLECTION OF EUROPEAN MASTER PRINTS, AND THE WASHINGTON ART CONSORTIUM COLLECTION OF AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHS, 1970-1980.
