SANCTUARIES & HABITAT CONSERVATION: HOUSTON AUDUBON COMPLETED TWO LAND ACQUISITIONS THAT ADDED 643 COASTAL ACRES TO ITS SANCTUARY SYSTEM IN FY 2021. HOUSTON AUDUBON'S 17 NATURE SANCTUARIES ON THE UPPER TEXAS COAST NOW PROVIDE OVER 4,100 ACRES OF CRITICAL HABITAT FOR OVER 300 SPECIES OF MIGRATORY AND RESIDENT BIRDS. THE SANCTUARIES ARE MANAGED WITH AN EMPHASIS ON BIRD MONITORING AND PROTECTION, INVASIVE SPECIES CONTROL, HABITAT RESTORATION, AND PROVIDING PUBLIC ACCESS TO NATURE. A COASTAL OPERATIONS CENTER WAS COMPLETED IN FY 2021 PROVIDING WORKSPACE AND HOUSING FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS AS WELL AS A SECOND NATIVES NURSERY TO PROVIDE MUCH-NEEDED NATIVE PLANT MATERIAL TO THE COASTAL SANCTUARIES AND COMMUNITIES. HOUSTON AUDUBON HAS BEEN A NATIONALLY ACCREDITED LAND TRUST SINCE 2017.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION & OUTREACH: DESPITE CHALLENGES CAUSED BY THE ONGOING PANDEMIC, HOUSTON AUDUBON ENGAGED OVER 16,000 CHILDREN AND ADULTS BOTH VIRTUALLY AND IN PERSON THROUGH 449 NATURE-BASED EDUCATIONAL EVENTS IN FY 2021, BOTH ONSITE AT ITS TWO URBAN SANCTUARIES AND THROUGH OUTREACH TO SCHOOLS, SENIOR FACILITIES, COMMUNITY CENTERS, AND OTHER VENUES. HOUSTON AUDUBON PROGRAMMING INCLUDED A SPEAKER SERIES, CLASSES ON BIRDS AND CONSERVATION, NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY, FIELD TRIPS, TOURS, BIRD WATCH EVENTS, CITIZEN SCIENCE BIRD SURVEYS, SUMMER CAMPS, AND PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS.
THROUGH A COLLABORATION WITH THE CORNELL LAB OF ORNITHOLOGY, HOUSTON AUDUBON EXPANDED ITS LIGHTS OUT FOR BIRDS PROGRAM, WHICH ALERTS THE COMMUNITY TO TURN LIGHTS OUT TO REDUCE BUILDING STRIKES BY MIGRATING BIRDS, TO A STATEWIDE INITIATIVE. BY SPRING 2021 FORTY BUSINESSES CONFIRMED PARTICIPATION IN THE LIGHTS OUT PROGRAM AND SEVEN TEXAS CITIES, INCLUDING HOUSTON, MADE PROCLAMATIONS IN SUPPORT OF THESE EFFORTS.
