A NOT-FOR-PROFIT LEGAL SERVICES PROVIDER AFFILIATED WITH CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF BROOKLYN AND QUEENS AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN, PROVIDES FREE LEGAL SERVICES AND KNOW YOUR RIGHTS EDUCATION TO LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS REGARDLESS OF RACE, RELIGION, ETHNICITY, NATIONAL ORIGIN, OR IMMIGRATION STATUS.WE ASSIST IMMIGRANTS WITH IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES, HOUSING LEGAL SERVICES, AND IMMIGRANT WORKERS' RIGHTS LEGAL SERVICES.IN ADDITION, WE ARE COMMITTED TO COLLABORATING WITH AND SERVING THE DIVERSE ETHNIC MINISTRIES OF OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH PASTORAL SERVICES FOR IMMIGRANTS. IMMIGRATION SERVICES:IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM PROVIDES A RANGE OF SERVICES, INCLUDING CONFIDENTIAL SCREENINGS FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS, REUNITING FAMILIES THROUGH FAMILY-BASED PETITIONS, PETITIONING FOR ASYLUM, AND DEFENDING IMMIGRANTS AGAINST DEPORTATION. IT ALSO HOSTS OUTREACH EVENTS AND PROVIDES KNOW-YOUR- RIGHTS EDUCATION. CMS PROVIDED FREE IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES TO MORE THAN 1079 NEW YORKERS IN 2021. AMONG OUR CLOSED CASES, CMS HELPED MORE THAN 250 LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENTS APPLY TO BECOME U.S. CITIZENS, 62 CHILDHOOD ARRIVALS OBTAIN OR RENEW DACA STATUS, 103 PEOPLE FROM HAITI AND VENEZUELA OBTAINED TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS (TPS). OUR LAWYERS GAVE COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS THAT REACHED MORE THAN THOUSANDS OF NEW YORK RESIDENTS AND INFORMED THEM ABOUT CHANGES IN FEDERAL IMMIGRATION POLICY AND WAYS TO AVOID FRAUDS AND SCAMS THAT TARGET VULNERABLE IMMIGRANTS.
HOUSING SERVICES:TENANT ADVOCACY PROGRAM (HOUSING OR TAP) PROVIDES HOUSING LEGAL SERVICES, TENANT ORGANIZING SERVICES, LEADERSHIP TRAINING, AND KNOW-YOUR-RIGHTS EDUCATION TO LOW-INCOME TENANTS, MOST OF WHOM ARE IMMIGRANTS. CMS PROVIDED FREE LEGAL ADVICE TO 1,286 TENANTS IN 2021. OUR LEGAL SERVICES PREVENTED OR DELAYED 949 EVICTIONS, HELPED 40 HOUSEHOLDS WIN CRITICALLY NECESSARY REPAIRS OF SUB-STANDARD AND HAZARDOUS HOUSING CONDITION, AND HELPED HOUSEHOLDS WIN MORE THAN $300,000 IN AFFIRMATIVE JUDGMENTS AND SETTLEMENTS. CATHOLIC MIGRATION SERVICES KEPT THOUGHTS OF PEOPLE SAFE IN THEIR HOMES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BY PREVENTING AN ESTIMATED 220,000 EVICTION CASES FROM ADVANCING.
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES:WORKERS' RIGHTS PROGRAM (WRP) HELPS LOW-WAGE WORKERS RECOVER UNPAID WAGES AND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, PROTECTS THEM AGAINST UNSAFE WORKING CONDITIONS, AND INFORMS WORKERS OF THEIR RIGHTS. THESE SERVICES WERE ESPECIALLY NEEDED DURING THIS PANDEMIC YEAR IN WHICH MANY LOW-WAGE WORKERS LOST THEIR JOBS AND, IF THEY RETAINED THEIR EMPLOYMENT, WORKED IN ESSENTIAL JOBS WITH SUBSTANTIAL HEALTH RISKS. THROUGH OUR SERVICES, LOW-WAGE WORKERS RECOVERED OVER $500,000 IN SETTLEMENTS AND JUDGMENTS FOR UNPAID WAGES AND ASSISTED SCORES OF WORKERS WITH UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE OR PANDEMIC UNEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE ISSUES.
