BRIDGING BOUNDARIES, EXPLORING BORDERS FOUNDED IN 2002 IN EASTPORT MAINE, THE TIDES INSTITUTE & MUSEUM OF ART IS LOCATED ON LONG STANDING TRADITIONAL AND CONTINUING PASSAMAQUODDY HOMELANDS ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST AT THE UNITED STATES/CANADA BORDER. THIS BOUNDARY LOCATION SHAPES ITS PERSPECTIVE ON THE REGION AND THE BROADER WORLD: THROUGH ITS INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS TO FOSTER NEW INNOVATIVE AND CROSS-SECTOR WORKS; THROUGH ITS WIDE RANGING COLLECTIONS, EDUCATION AND PRESERVATION EFFORTS; AND THROUGH ITS PARTNERSHIPS AND ENDEAVORS TO STRENGTHEN THE REGION'S ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, VITALITY AND WIDER CONNECTIONS.

COLLECTIONS - IN 2021, A PHOTOGRAPH BY PAUL CAPONIGRO AND TWO LITHOGRAPHS BY STOW WENGENROTH WERE ADDED TO THE COLLECTION, AS WERE GAR/CIVIL WAR- ERA RECORDS AND EPHEMERA, AND A COMPLETE SET OF DIGITIZED RECORDS OF THE EASTPORT SENTINEL NEWSPAPER, AMONG OTHER ITEMS.
PRESERVATION - IN 2021, WORK ON THE MASONIC BUILDING CONTINUED, WITH STOREFRONTS REBUILT, INCLUDING NEW GROUND-FLOOR WINDOWS AND FRAMING,NEW ENTRIES INCLUDING HANDICAPPED-ACCESSIBLE DOORWAY AND IMPROVED VENTILATION WITH SCREENED TRANSOM WINDOWS.
EDUCATION IN 2021, THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTED AN EXHIBITION OF STOW WENGENROTH'S LITHOGRAPHS FROM THE REGION, WHICH SET ATTENDANCE RECORDS AND INCLUDED ONLINE PRESENTATIONS OF VIRTUAL EXHIBITIONS AND RESOURCES. A CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITION OF VIDEO AND MYLAR INSTALLATION WAS PRESENTED IN THE NORTH CHURCH PROJECT SPACE, ALONG WITH A LIVE-STREAMED OPENING PERFORMANCE BY THE ARTIST. FOSTER NEW WORK IN 2021, THE ORGANIZATION HOSTED 11 ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE, AND PRESENTED THREE CONTEMPORARY SITE-SPECIFIC SCULPTURAL INSTALLATIONS IN TWO BUILDINGS, INCLUDING STOREFRONT EXHIBITIONS VISIBLE FROM THE SIDEWALK OR STREET, MADE FROM ROPE, LATEX IMPRESSIONS OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE COMMUNITY. ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE CREATED WORK IN A VARIETY OF MEDIA, INCLUDING TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, PRINTMAKING AND OTHERS. PARTNERSHIPS IN 2021, THE ORGANIZATION COORDINATED EXHIBITION OPENINGS AND DROP-IN PROGRAMS WITH OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS, SUCH AS SUMMER FESTIVALS AND ARTS-THEMED WEEKENDS. EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS WERE OFFERED IN LOCAL SCHOOLS AS WELL AS IN SENIOR CENTERS AND GROUP HOMES. A SPECIAL WEEKEND OF ARTIST WORKSHOPS WAS OFFERED AS A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACHERS FROM THE MAINE ALLIANCE FOR ARTS EDUCATION, A STATEWIDE ORGANIZATION.
